Each summer in Alaska, many millions of sockeye salmon return from the ocean to freshwater rivers and streams. With the aid of electro magnetic fields (magnetoreception) and their sense of smell, they seek to return to their natal spawning ground.
Waiting for the salmon as they swim upstream are the many brown bears eager to indulge in the protein rich, high omega 3 fatty acids of the adult salmon. This results in high activity along the rivers where we witness the bears chasing the salmon, fighting over each others catch, teaching their young how to fish and overconfident first year cubs (cubs of the year) wrestling with fish that are almost their size. When they've satisfied their appetite, we can view the bears on the open tundra where sows will nurse their cubs away from the hustle of the river while juvenile's will wrestle and play.
After flying in from either King Salmon or Homer (to be determined), we will get you settled in at camp and after the mandatory safety briefing leave camp and head towards the river. Every years' salmon run is different in timing, number of fish and this can determine where the majority of the bears will congregate.
As with our Coastal Bear Camps, camping among the bears at our Salmon Run Camps allows us to maximize our days often starting at 6.30am and staying out on the rivers and tundra as late as 11pm. It also allows us to return to camp to rest up if so desired during the course of the day.
These camps are suitable for nature lovers wanting to experience a true backcountry experience while viewing the amazing bears, photographers of all levels out to capture incredible images of the bears behaving in their most natural ways as they've done for thousands of years.
